Unit 3 Beyond the Call of Duty

Vocabulary ~ 

1. imperative (adj, n)
-Expressive of command; containing positive command;imperative orders.
1. The suit of kings are imperative.
2. It is imperative that politicians should be good communicators.

2. spirited (adj)
-having energy and determination
1.She is a spirited and energetic girl.
2.The lesson was full of spirited.

3. engaging (adj)
-pleasant and attracting your interest
1. He gives me an engaging smile.
2. The balloon is engaging the little girl.

4. tosses (v)
-to throw something, especially something light, with a quick gentle movement of your hand
1. She crumpled the letter and tossed it into the fire.
2. 'Catch!' said Sandra, tossing her bag to him.

5. exhilaration (adj)
-a feeling of being happy, excited, and full of energy
1. She enjoyed the exhilaration of jet-skiing.
2. Ali likes the exhilaration of the lesson.

6. attachment (n)
-working for a particular organization, especially for a short period of time

7. enclosures (n)
-an area surrounded by a wall or fence, and used for a particular purpose

8. scrutinizing (v)
-to examine someone or something very carefully

1. She scrutinized his face.
2. He scrutinized the document.

9. crucial (adj)
-something that extremely important, because everything else depends on it
1. This aid money is crucial to the government's economic policies.
2. The work of monks was crucial in spreading Christianity.

10. disabilities (n)
-a physical or mental condition that makes it difficult for someone to use a part of their body properly, or to learn normally.
1. Public places are becoming more accessible to people with disabilities.
2. These children in this school are with severe learning disabilities.

11. dyslexic (n)
-a condition that makes it difficult for someone to read and spell
1. Two of the children in the class are dyslexic.
2. The dyslexic boy kept disturbing his classmate.

12. burdened (n)
-something difficult or worrying that you are responsible for
1. The burden of taxation has risen considerably.
2. Nothing can lift the burden from my shoulders.

13. endeavor (v)
-to try very hard
1. We always endeavor to please our customers.
2. He is endeavor on his study. 


14. fidgety (adj)
-unable to stay still, especially because of being bored or nervous
1. The boys get fidgety if they can't play outside.
2. With the mobile phone abuse at a high, he can't help but get a little fidgety.


15. imparting (v)
-to give information, knowledge, wisdom etc to someone
1. Use a piece of fresh ginger to impart a Far-Eastern flavour to simple ingredients.

16. unruly (adj)
-violent or difficult to control
1. The boy is unruly in his behaviour.
2. unruly children


17. convinced (adj)
-feeling certain that something is true
1. Molly agreed, but she did not sound very convinced.
2. I was convinced that we were doing the right thing.


18. spotted (v)
-to notice someone or something, especially when they are difficult to see or recognize
1. It can be hard for even a trained doctor to spot the symptoms of lung cancer.
2. Meg spotted someone coming out of the building.


19. suicide (n)
-the act of killing yourself
1. More people commit suicide at Christmas than at any other time.

2. My mother attempted suicide on many occasions.


20. implore (v)
-to ask for something in an emotional way
1. 'Don't go,' I implored her.
2. She implored the soldiers to save her child.


21. pursuing (v)
-to continue doing an activity or trying to achieve something over a long period of time
1. She plans to pursue a career in politics.
2. Students should pursue their own interests, as well as do their school work.
